CAMPO ITALIANO

In the early 2000s, upon the reinvogration of the Italian American Cultural Club under new leadership, several fundraisers and other programs were facilitated. Realizing a profit from these programs and events, the organization wanted to a find a way to invest these monies into youth programming, a cornerstone that was being developed of our organization's mission of "Keeping the Culture Alive." With a group of teachers, both retired and active, within the Italian Community, a children's camp titled "Campo Italiano" was born in order to teach the children the Language, Culture, History, Heritage, and Cuisine of the Italians.

Just as with the early origins of the club where the organization was the only bridge between individuals that immigrated to the United States from Italy and their homeland, programs such as Campo Italiano ensures that this legacy, information, knowledge, and appreciation of the culture lasts for generations to come, especially for those that may begin to be separated from it due to loss of ancestors and much more.

In present day, the Campo Italiano program has grown leaps and bounds to become the robust and intense program that it is today - a five-day, day camp hosted at the Jeffersonian Lodge's Italian Village that hosts a curriculum over the five days that sees the participating children learn about the Italian Culture, History, Heritage, Cuisine, and so much more.

Led by an all-volunteer team of individuals from the Italian American Cultural Club, the program is a marvel that hundreds of hours of planning, building, and creation takes place year-round for the camp and thousands of hours takes place of executiong during the week of the camp with not one person being paid for its planning or execution. The program is truly a labor of love for all of those involved in its facilitation.

Students must be entering Kindergarten the Fall after Camp is held in order to participate in Campo Italiano. Students remain a camper until they reach the summer in which they will be entering into 7th grade, at which time the student is then a Youth Leader, learning fundamental leadership skills and working with the students and the organization to facilitate the dozens of jobs that must be undertaken each and every day in order to adequately facilitate the program.

Registration for the Campo Italiano Program is kept at a low-cost for all of its participants to ensure that we can continue to evangelize the Italian Culture to our future generations. It is due to the generous support of the sponsors of the Italian American Cultural Club, the membership dues paid by our members, and the hard work of our members at various functions throughout the year in which we are able to facilitate the camp at the cost at which we do.
